Personal branding is powerful, but corporate brands often scale much larger

Summary

  • Building a personal brand is a great starting point, but corporate brands can grow much larger. It’s important to recognize that while having a strong personal brand can drive significant revenue, as your business scales, it may contribute less proportionally.

  • In my experience, my personal brand initially drove all our company's revenue when we made about $5 million. However, as the company grew and earned over $30 million, my personal brand's contribution remained ~$10 million, indicating a plateau.

  • Personal brands have limits compared to massive corporations. For example, famous individuals like Kylie Jenner or Christian Ronaldo have incredible personal brands but don’t match the scale of huge businesses like Coca-Cola or Wells Fargo.

  • Consider the scale: while having a personal brand is beneficial, dreaming big means understanding the value in large corporate revenues. Some companies earn over $200 billion annually, which overshadows what even the biggest personal brands can achieve.

  • Ultimately, focus on expanding your business by diversifying beyond just personal branding, aiming to scale like those major companies known worldwide.

How To Take Action

I would suggest starting with building your personal brand to kick off growth. Share your skills and expertise online using social media or a simple blog. This won't cost much and can attract customers who trust you personally.

A good way of expanding beyond your personal brand is to think big. Once you have a customer base, start considering how to scale your efforts. This might involve creating a stronger brand identity for your business, separate from you as an individual. Begin exploring partnerships or new products that don’t rely solely on your personal brand.

Consider how big corporations achieve their scale. They don't just rely on one person; they have diverse teams and multiple revenue streams. Think about how you can diversify. Maybe find a business partner or offer different services that cater to a broader audience.

As you expand, focus on building a reputation for your business that doesn’t depend solely on your presence. Create systems and processes that allow your business to run smoothly even when you’re not directly involved in every part.

Finally, keep an eye on your long-term goals. Dreaming big means being open to growth opportunities that may lead to significant expansion beyond your personal brand. Look to large corporations for inspiration on achieving scale while keeping the core values of your business intact. This balance will drive steady growth and development.
