I Didn’t Understand Marketing

Summary

  • My first business failed because I didn't understand marketing. I learned that it's not enough to just build something; you need people to know about it too.
  • I paid $1,500 to have someone build a job board for me, but no one visited it initially because I didn't know how to market it.
  • I hired a marketing firm in Canada and spent all my money, but I didn't get any results from them.
  • Instead of quitting, I decided to learn marketing myself. There weren't many resources like YouTube or online courses, so I read things online and tried different strategies.
  • This taught me that if you can't acquire money, you can acquire information. Information can help you lift yourself out of a tough spot.
  • Through learning and experimenting, I managed to grow my website traffic from zero to over 60,000 visitors a month in less than six months.

How To Take Action

I would suggest starting with learning about marketing, even if budgets are tight. Information is a powerful tool, and there are many free resources available today. You can find articles and videos online that explain how to market your business effectively without spending much money.

A good way of doing this is by trying different marketing strategies on a small scale and seeing what works best. For instance, start by sharing content on social media, engaging with your customers on platforms they use, and building a community around your brand. You can also try collaborating with other businesses or influencers for cross-promotion, which can introduce you to new audiences without a big budget.

It's important to understand that not everything will work the first time, but experimenting and learning from those experiences can be valuable. Be persistent and patient as you try different approaches.

Think of marketing as not just a task but a skill that can be developed over time. With dedication, you can see significant growth, just like I did, taking my website traffic from zero to 60,000 visitors in less than six months.

Remember, if you can't acquire money, you can always acquire information. Use it to lift yourself and your business to new heights.
