Summary
After helping over 300 service business owners with YouTube, I realized that success often comes by doing less marketing, not more. YouTube is unique because it combines marketing and sales efforts, building trust while you're not actively engaged. It’s less about high subscriber counts and more about fostering meaningful client interactions.
Editing every 4 to 7 seconds can feel necessary, but a shift towards value-focused, informative content is trending. Simplifying videos can enhance educational value and connection, as demonstrated by YouTubers like MrBeast and Jamie Wolfer, who prioritize storytelling and simple, authentic presentations over flashy edits.
You can create effective content with accessible tools like Loom recordings or video podcasts. Simplified visuals using a whiteboard or a straightforward talking-head setup can be engaging and informative. As demonstrated, a gym channel doubled revenue to over a million dollars with less than 500 subscribers by using simple video formats effectively.
B-rolls can enrich storytelling without the necessity of elaborate production. Collect stock footage inexpensively or consider AI-generated clips in the future. Keep it simple and relevant to enhance the narrative without overshadowing the content value.
YouTube can exponentially grow revenue. With consistent content showing your expertise, you can attract local and national clients seeking specific skills. Bobby, a landscaper, illustrates how YouTube transformed his local business into a national design consultancy, moving from small-scale projects to a diversified business model through YouTube leads.
Creating targeted content that answers specific audience queries ensures long-term content relevance and viewer engagement. Instead of broad topics, focus on niche questions to attract prospective clients ready for solutions. Videos serve as long-standing resources that answer frequent questions, fostering continuous new viewer engagement even years later.
Optimize every video with a clear call to action. Use search-based video titles and optimized descriptions to increase discoverability. Ensure your video drives viewers to take the next step, whether engaging your services directly or building an email list via lead magnets.
A YouTube channel serves as a client-attracting funnel, offering invaluable repeated exposure. YouTube naturally promotes your content to viewers who have watched and engaged with multiple videos, thereby increasing the likelihood of turning viewers into clients through repeated exposure.
Start with YouTube shorts to gain confidence and traction, then move to long-form content for deeper engagement. Repurpose long-form content into shorts for broader reach. Efficient content creation through batching, outsourcing, and using AI for tasks like scripting can maintain a sustainable workflow while improving content quality.
Build your YouTube-to-client bridge through storytelling and client success stories to enhance trust and establish credibility. Use end screens and playlists to encourage video binge sessions and thereby foster a stronger viewer connection, leading them effectively towards becoming clients.
Ensure your website is optimized with clear calls to action and streamlined booking processes, making it easy for potential clients to transition from a viewer to a client. Use tools that facilitate scheduling and minimize barriers to customer engagement.

How To Take Action
I would suggest starting with YouTube as a low-cost, high-value marketing tool for your business or personal growth. YouTube doesn’t just market your business; it also builds trust and can convert views into clients. Focus on creating meaningful content rather than worrying about subscriber numbers.
A good way of doing this is by keeping your videos simple and informative. Forget about constant flashy editing. Videos like those from MrBeast show success through clear storytelling and authentic presentation. You can easily start by using Loom recordings or simple talking-head videos to share your expertise. Even YouTubers with fewer than 500 subscribers have increased their revenue using this strategy.
To enhance your storytelling, consider using affordable stock footage or AI-generated clips as B-roll for more engaging content. Make sure every video is optimized with a call to action, directing viewers to your services or email sign-up lists.
Start with YouTube Shorts to gain confidence and traction, then shift to long-form content for deeper engagement. You can repurpose this content into Shorts for wider reach, using tools like AI for efficient content creation.
Focus on targeting content that answers specific questions your audience has. This strategy ensures long-term engagement and relevance. Lastly, make sure your website is easy to navigate, with clear calls to action that transition viewers to clients smoothly.

after helping over 300 service business owners build their client base through YouTube One Thing became crystal clear the ones who succeed the fastest are actually doing less marketing not more they discovered what I painfully learned after burning thousands on ads and years failing at SEO and that's most marketing methods are just expensive ways to get attention they don't actually convert that attention into sales but that's when the Breakthrough happens right these business owners realize that YouTube isn't just another marketing channel it's the only platform that handles both marketing and sales in one place your content builds trust while you sleep and viewers Reach Out ready to buy not to just learn more but here's where most people get stuck they make the leap over to YouTube with the same outdated Playbook that failed them everywhere else they're still creating content instead of sales assets you know chasing vanity metrics like subscriber counts and gold play buttons instead of client conversations so in this video I'm going to show you why YouTube is much easier than you think how it can expand your business in ways you haven't even thought about yet and I'm going to show you my exact system for turning YouTube into your complete marketing and sales engine even if you're camera shy or think you're too late to start is as recently as just a few months ago I was pretty fixated on the editing of my videos to the point where my editor knew that the rule was something has to happen on screen every 4 to 7 seconds and that wasn't just arbitrary you know I'd heard from all the YouTube editing experts out there that that's what you wanted to do to keep people interested and keep them from leaving my videos they call this kind of editing retention editing because it's just there to keep as many viewers as possible through pure overstimulation and since almost every video gets a pretty huge drop off in views in the first 30 seconds I was willing to throw everything at those 30 seconds just to stop the bleeding but then earlier this year I actually hired a producer for my channel to help me with everything from thumbnails to editing my scripts to actually coming up with topics that you guys would like the most and he came in pretty hot with a YouTube Trend that I never would have thought of on my own so Yousef what is this trend that you're seeing now with these uh educational videos there's a lot of twers like William Brown and Charlie Morgan that are now creating super high value content where they're just very informal very value based and they're getting hundreds of thousands of views and hundreds of thousands of subscribers just because of the amount of value that they're able to give so it feels like YouTube now is prioritizing value over everything especially for people who are educating on YouTube this is great news because a lot of times you know things like retention based editing and trying to make your video too perfect can take away from the educational value of the content in other words the pendulum is swung from that need for constant over stimulation to a calmer Pace where viewers can actually settle in and learn the thing they clicked on the video for even the king of over edited videos Mr Beast is changing his ways saying that he's slowed down his videos focused more on storytelling let scenes breathe yelled less more personality longer videos and his views have skyrocketed as a result why do you think that the average viewer like is gravitating more toward this new style and away from the overly edited stuff I think it comes down to expectations at some point viewers probably stopped watching heavily edited content because they realize that it is not giving them the value that they thought they would get clicking on the thumbnail or reading the title they realized that the golden nuggets are not in the you know super flashy types of videos the constant zooms animated text and all the whooshing sound effects that used to keep people's attention have just become too predictable to be as effective anymore and knowing that pretty much gave me permission to scale back on all the editing tricks that we used to rely so heavily on which let us put out videos quicker and slow down enough so that I could connect better with you you my audience so if you thought that doing YouTube means Hollywood level production values this should be a huge weight off your shoulders take wedding planner and YouTuber Jamie wolfer for instance my then fiance and I used to watch her when we were busy planning our own wedding and we pretty much binged hours of our stuff over one weekend and then we'd keep going back whenever we had another question that popped up there was no retention editing no Graphics really very little b-roll if any even though she could have easily thrown in some you know wedding stock footage here and there she didn't need any of it because she was giving us useful information that we needed with her fun personality and her simple approach not only kept us interested but it's taken her business for quite the ride first of all she was able to completely stop chasing down clients at expensive wedding Expos and it gets even better than that because she also used her new skill for creating simple videos to make a DE DIY course that she could sell to engaged couples all across the country to teach them how to plan their own weddings and that addition quadrupled her Revenue now she's got the freedom to only take on actual clients when she wants to Jaime's success is a testament to the power of creating authentic relatable content on YouTube you know her simple in straightforward videos resonated with her audience and drove significant business results this is a valuable lesson for any service business owner who is looking to use YouTube for growth you know you're you're now much more free to spend less time convincing people to stick around so you can now just focus more on you know connecting with them through what you can teach them one powerful way to make that connection is through storytelling you know people are naturally drawn to stories and tend to understand and remember information better when it's presented that way so by weaving in your own experiences your clients's experiences or even metaphors into your videos you can make your content much more engaging and relatable to your audience so what are some easy video formats that you can try that lean into to this simpler approach yeah there's two formats that immediately just jump out to me one is kind of a loom recording where you're just doing a screen recording and showing your screen and this is especially great if you're talking through some sort of pro process or workflow and again they don't have to be super pretty it can just be like a rough sketch but as long as you're able to show the information visually a loom video can do really well if you do this I would just recommend showing your face at least in the beginning so that people can get to know you a little bit while they learn faceless videos just have a much harder time creating that no like and Trust factor that actually turns viewers into clients also video podcasts are super hot right now and they let you go long form if you want to do that without the need to script anything out this works particularly well if you have someone else in your business that you can co-host it with you know you can just chat about every important topic in your industry that your clients would be interested in you can even bring on guests like you know industry experts or your current or past clients the hail fitness channel does this all the time you know Jay brings on his own training clients who talk about their results and doing this super simp Le format is responsible for literally doubling his Gym's Revenue to over a million dollar a year and that's with under 500 subscribers and an average video view count of around 250 views you can do one of those uh screens in the background where you can write on them and a lower teag version of doing that would be let's say a wideboard so if you can use like a whiteboard or a Smartboard just show the information and kind of interact with it that would be great as well I used to watch Rand fishkin's whiteboard Friday series every single week when he did them showing all of his SEO tricks but this old style is actually making a pretty big comeback it combines the casual and relaxed pacing with visuals so it's easier to take in and really understand the concepts you're teaching without needing any fancy editing tricks along the same lines you could do you know webinar style slide presentations but hey plain old talking head Style videos work great too there's no need to reinvent the wheel here as long as your information good that's really what people care about so simple is good but how simple is too simple when it comes to YouTube and keeping people engaged there's really no hard and fast rule here like I said ja's killing it with nothing more than her face on screen but me personally I like to live by the old rule of show rather than tell by sprinkling in some elements that help me tell the story a little more visually and the way I like to do that best is through b-roll clips and if you don't know b-roll is just the video that plays over someone talking like this this or this and when you do it right it just adds to the story without being jarring or obtrusive now this is completely optional of course but there are a few different ways of doing it first my favorite way is to just take an afternoon and shoot a bunch of stuff that you can use and reuse whenever a video calls for it you can just shoot yourself doing various things that you do every day from working with the client to working at your computer pouring a cup of coffee driving putting on your shoes pretty much any little action that you can think of and the master of this is Matt dlla his videos are gorgeous because he really knows his way around the camera and he uses a ton of b-roll throughout but don't worry you don't have to use nearly as much of it and it doesn't have to be as well shot either that's not the point it's just great to be able to use it to break away from a talking head video every now and then for variety and to help certain Concepts come to life so you can shoot it yourself or you can get a stock Video subscription for about 20 bucks a month and just download anything and everything that you'd ever need and soon enough maybe even by the time this video comes out you're going to be able to generate any b-roll Clips you need with AI and another trick I lean on although not nearly as much as I used to are gifts just to add in some humor now and then and to you know relate to my audience through relevant pop culture moments but easy does it only use these visual elements when it makes sense and don't feel any pressure to overdo it and in case you were thinking but Wes your videos have a ton of stuff going on I have actually pulled back on the editing a lot from where I used to be but I can still add visuals that I think add a little something extra simply because I've grown to a point now where I've hired a really good editor who can do it at the end of the day I do it because I want to and because what I teach can be so visual but what's actually going to lead to clients is the value of your content not the production value and another benefit to simple editing is that the simpler it is the more you can just use AI tools to do all of your editing for you saving you even more time in the process that gives you back more time to concentrate on planning your next video's content and how you can better connect with your audience this guy went from feeding off the scraps left by his local competitors to making seven figures a year working remotely with his dream clients all across the country his secret simple short YouTube videos I started with Flyers knocking on doors but now we can hit into seven figures no problem and that's because of YouTube and the leads that it brings but before all the YouTube success Bobby was running a small lawn maintenance business in St Louis and it wasn't easy so Bobby what was it like finding clients in those early pre-youtube days man I don't even want to go back there I think I I was definitely struggling and I was doing what most contractors do where you rely on you know your home advisors or your Angie's List and you get a lot of tire kicker not very good leads not the kind that you want to get into because you have an established yourself you haven't established that brand that expert knowledge that you possess that you want to get out in front of the right clientele and so what you do is you burn up a lot of cash and you make a lot of mistakes and Bobby started noticing just how much competition he had for the projects that he actually wanted I remember cut somebody's grass one day and they had another company there installing their patios and doing the retaining wall and I'm like this is what I want to do and this is the niche that I want to be in and so I shifted at that point and definitely started to go more into the design and The Hardscape realm you really have to Market yourself in a way where this is what I want to do and you keep persisting and you keep refining your message eventually you realize okay this is the Avatar that I really want to go after how can I get more of those in front of me and I think that's where YouTube really started to come in but he didn't really know that at the time he actually started off a bit smaller what I did is I simply took my phone out and I would record different segments and I would throw it up on Facebook a little on Instagram like not knowing at all what I was doing but I noticed that people really enjoyed seeing that process I went on YouTube to learn things and I really enjoyed it and it just clicked I I just maybe I woke up one day with a clear head and I was like I want to put something out there and I want to give it a go and I did so he took the plunge and started a YouTube channel but it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows at first you know Bobby had no clue what kind of videos to make some days he wanted to throw in the towel and just go back to Lawns and I wanted to quit a ton but then something happened that kept him going within a couple weeks I was starting to get some results like hearing I saw you on YouTube or get an email that oh I saw this on YouTube it wasn't much at first but those small wins they were about to transform into something much much bigger you get lucky and you make one or two videos that pop off you don't know which ones are going to be you don't know why a lot of times I still don't know why some of my videos do well and some don't so even though he didn't really have a process yet his channel wasn't just crawling anymore it did start to snowball more views led to more subscribers which led to even more views and clients it was like a domino effect but in the best way possible first local clients started pouring in all saying the same thing I found you on YouTube but these weren't just any clients they were different from the leads he used to get these guys were ready to hire eager to hear his design ideas and interested in taking on those larger projects it was like YouTube had pre-sold them on Bobby's expertise before he ever even met them but working with local clients was just the beginning right what happened next I I remember one particular client they were out of Augusta Georgia they had watched the channel and I got a call on like a Friday night and they said they wanted me to design their yard and that was one of the first real bigger opportunities like a master plan kind of thing where where you tackle an entire space and I was taken back by it like oh wow I had no idea people in Georgia were were watching I actually flew out there and I did a design and we ended up kind of doing the project too the point is is it opened up opportunities for people in different states to come to me who maybe didn't have a landscape designer or a company that they trusted or that they liked in their town and it really sparked from that that one client gave me a lot of confidence and I realized wow I could create an online business in a way by being a landscaper and I thought that was so crazy just like that Bobby's business went from local to long distance and it wasn't a one-off either more and more out ofate clients started reaching out but that led to a new problem he was living the dream but he felt pulled in too many directions I realized this isn't sustainable at all I can't be flying all over the country my wife is pregnant with our first uh this isn't going to happen so um I had to develop a system in a process where we talk through Zoom I put together plans that anybody can do whether you're a diyer or you want to find your favorite local landscaper or contractor there plans that are Universal and they make sense it's become streamlined in a way where I'm able to grow and scale this kind of business versus being tied down to flying out to a place and run projects here in the St Louis area I already had this install business but now I have this this design business as well I get to design all over still it's cool Bobby's YouTube success wasn't just luck he had cracked the code on what his audience really wanted to see over time he identified four types of videos that consistently performed well so I have a couple different buckets that I like to call them a different style videos I do right now what they are is movies is what I call one I'm a big movie buff and so what I try to do metaphorically is bring in a movie scenario so that people understand like I did The Karate Kid and your Landscape designer is your Mr Miyagi and then I have like a big design concept line where I show lots of cool Pinterest things and projects and I really hone in on a design technique through those images to teach you something then I have something called uh like showing designs I record my screen doing a certain type of design and then I bring you all over the country with three different examples and while I'm firing out tips on what's going on that Design's going off in the background so you're watching the design get created at the time and then the final one is almost like a client success story a testimonial it's kind of that buttery b-roll beautiful showing the whole project and then breaking it down but coming up with those four content buckets was only half the battle any video you ever make is going to work way better if you're actually connecting with your audience right honestly you seem like such a natural in front of the camera and that's not easy for most people so what tips do you have for anyone dealing with nerves and you know just wanting to come across as likable and genuine the real trick is just talking like you're talking to a friend over coffee just having a conversation don't think about all the people watching don't try and reach a million people if you realize that I just want to talk to my buddy Joe or KK or whatever that's going to make it easier talking to the camera for sure and non- camera skills are just one of those things where practice kind of makes perfect it's a pretty weird skill when you think about it and no one's born with it you just have to be okay with being a little awkward in the beginning as you get more and more comfortable like you're talking to a friend so as his channel grew Bobby faced a new challenge time management so he was spending hours editing videos on top of running his business and being present for his family you've heard it a million times if you watch any kind of how to grow your YouTube channel is you've really got to look at this as a business and go all in I get that and that's true but I don't know if that's realistic life happens and things get busy and when you start doing a good job with YouTube you get more leads right so it's going to take your time away to doing more designing for me or running more projects or appointments so it's a balancing act I think what makes this manageable is getting help as soon as you can get an editor I do a lot of editing still myself but I also kind of have some people that I can lean on a little bit to get help someone for thumbnails how do you do all this well if you don't have a bunch of employees that rely on you for hours and money and you do it more like a contractor model I think that that is is a really cool way to do business they don't all have to be on staff essentially I got one employee for my business it's me this move let Bobby scale up his video production without sacrificing quality or burning out you know he could pour all of his energy into creating really great Landscapes and connecting with with his audience while his editor was over here polishing the videos to Perfection but now let's talk numbers because Bobby's YouTube success translated into some pretty serious business growth okay so if we're getting into some numbers I'll throw out some numbers here I will tell you that my Google AdSense Revenue based on watch time is not very much that's not a big part of it what's big is the leads that come through for people that I can help with designs so if we're talking some numbers as far as design Revenue I can definitely hit six figures with that no problem and then if they are local those lead to projects and that's where the real money in our business comes so as far as project Revenue it depends on the year of course but we can hit into seven figures no problem and that's because of YouTube and the leads that it brings so does all your business come in through YouTube YouTube is the Hub I don't spend money on Facebook I don't put stuff on Instagram I have a spreadsheet where I get my leads and it's amazing how many are YouTube YouTube YouTube design clients I would say it's at least 50 to 60 projects I bet you it's in that 30% range and that's just what he can directly attribute to YouTube viewers most of the rest are actually referrals from previous clients he got from you guessed it YouTube but the fact that at least 30% of Bobby's local business comes from YouTube it's pretty crazy considering that most people just write off YouTube as a nonviable strategy for local businesses the thinking goes you know people will be watching my channel pretty much from everywhere and only a small percentage of them will be local enough to be able to work with me but Bobby actually has an as up his sleeve to pack his audience with more people in his local St Louis Market it's kind of old school but it's working you can throw out a hashtag there so that it drops St Louis and the algorithm is very smart and it's going to find people in your Market that are looking for a landscape designer or how to make my backyard look cool or whatever and it's going to suggest you in front of those people you do the heavy lifting up front it's going to produce leads my business tripled from $60,000 to $200,000 in Just 2 years then it quadrupled from $2 200,000 to $800,000 a year since and it's all because of one day I mustered up the courage to post my first video YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world coming second only to Google so if every business needs a website for Google why wouldn't you want to take advantage of YouTube too this is the exact YouTube system that I'm using to help hundreds of small service business owners become profitable on YouTube in 2025 but before we dive into how YouTube can transform your business in 2025 let me ask you this this have you ever tried to solve a Rubik's Cube at first glance it seems random and complicated but in reality it's all about following a specific sequence of moves without that sequence you're just twisting the cube endlessly with no progress YouTube marketing works the same way it's not about making random moves or doing everything at once but about following a stepbystep system that sets your business up for long-term success and the sequence for business success on YouTube has some key moves that you got to master in the right order YouTube stands out from every other platform because it's built for longevity think about platforms like Instagram or Tik Tok where your content's good for a few days maybe a week if you're lucky but after that it's just gone buried under new posts on YouTube though it's completely different you know your videos live on for months even years because people use YouTube like a search engine they're always looking for answers to their problems which means that if you create the right content YouTube's going to keep showing your videos to new people long after you've hit publish that's why Evergreen content is such a critical part of this YouTube strategy so Evergreen content just means videos that stay relevant for a really long time they don't rely on Trends or short-term Buzz instead they answer common questions or they solve ongoing problems that your clients will likely have today tomorrow and years down the road take a look at this video from Jeff Sue called right an incredible resume it's 3 years old now and it's racked up over 3.4 million views and counting in fact if you look at this graph it's still gaining views steadily every single day and this video how to paint a room is nearly 3 years old too and with 6.6 million views it's climbing just as steady and the reason is these are common issues that Their audience will always need help with you know the more you focus on these kinds of topics the questions and the problems that your clients constantly ask you about the more longlasting value your videos are going to have but here's the key don't try to cover too much in a single video you know broad topics like you know how to get in shape may seem like a layup but they're just way too General instead it's better to focus on more specific problems for example a video called how to improve an Mobility or best stretches for shoulder pain zero in on a particular need and sure these types of videos May attract fewer viewers but when you're using YouTube for client generation it's not even about going viral it's about getting found by people who are looking for solutions to specific issues and those are often the people who are much more likely to become your clients then once these Evergreen videos are out there they keep doing the heavy lifting for you even if you're not not constantly creating new stuff those videos can continue bringing in views and potential clients for months even years I have videos that are over 5 years old now that still get lots of views every day because the information in them is still good Evergreen content is really powerful but it's only as effective as your ability to get it in front of the right people 92% of YouTube viewers regularly use it to learn not just to be entertained which means people are actively turning to it to get their questions answered and to help solve their problems so to get your videos discovered you need a strong search-based strategy one that targets exactly what your audience is searching for here's how to do it so first your video titles need to match what people are actually typing into YouTube think about the specific phrases and questions that your potential clients are typing into that search bar a lot of video creators have been told to you know write titles that are more vague and clickbaity which is fine if you're a bigger Channel and YouTube just you know shows your content on people's homepages all the time but when you're smaller you can't really copy the bigger channels strategy because you're far less likely to show up on someone's feed when you're new so if you're a nutritionist rather than a title like filling my freezer with 22 scratch made freezer meals which people probably aren't searching for right you want something more to the point like how to meal prep for a week that title is much more likely to match what someone's typing into the search bar and that increases the chances that YouTube's going to recommend your video next optimize your video descriptions even though some experts want to downplay descriptions they actually do still play a really important role in how YouTube's algorithm understands your video so your description should repeat your main keywords naturally so the algorithm knows exactly what your video is about for example if your title were how to meal prep for a week easy freezer meals your description might start with in this video I'll show you how to meal prep for a week with easy freezer meals that save time and reduce food waste by repeating meal prep for a week and easy freezer meals you help YouTube C categorize your video better which just increases your chances of you know ranking higher in search results and a great Pro tip here is to use YouTube's Auto suggestions to get your keywords in the first place so when you start typing something into YouTube search bar it automatically suggests what other users are searching for this can be a gold mine for choosing the exact phrasing to use in your titles and your descriptions so let's just stick with our meal prep video example here so start typing how to meal prep into the search bar you're then going to see suggestions like how to meal prep for weight loss or how to meal prep for muscle gain these are real searches that are happening on YouTube so if you see something relevant to your video use that exact phrasing to match what people are actively searching for if your videos about budget friendly meal prep a title like how to meal prep on a budget seven easy recipes is going to align perfectly with those search suggestions and over time this builds momentum you know once YouTube starts associating your Channel with these topics viewers who find one video are much more likely to be shown another one of your videos in their recommendations which just helps increase your visibility even more and when creating a library of searchable videos probably the best place to start is with simple FAQ videos these are absolute gold when it comes to reaching people who are almost ready to become clients and FAQ videos work so well because they answer the exact questions that your prospects are already asking you know these people are actively searching for Solutions and are often at or at least really close to that decision-making stage and by providing them with clear thorough answers to their most common questions you position yourself as the expert that they need so I've got a few steps you can follow here to make it super easy on you step one is just to brainstorm your FAQs you know start by listing out every question that your clients and Prospects ask you about all the time you know think about consultations sales calls or any other kind of interactions you have where people are looking for advice these questions are your ideal first video topics for example if you're a digital marketing consultant you might get asked how do I improve my website SEO or what's the best way to get more leads online each of these questions can be easily turned into its own video step two don't get stuck on ideas you know use tools to help you brainstorm so if you're having trouble coming up with 20 to 30 FAQ ideas you can easily use chat GPT to generate a list for you a great prompt to use would be something like just generate a list of frequently asked questions about then you fill in your service or indust that's going to give you a really solid batch of questions that you can start turning into videos right away then once you've worked all the way through your FAQs it's time to expand into listicle Style videos these are still highly searchable really engaging and give structured actionable information for example you might create videos like five tips for improving your SEO fast or seven steps to creating a killer email marketing campaign or nine mistakes to avoid when setting up gole Google ads I'll always remember this advice from productivity YouTuber Ali abdal I heard him say once that pretty much every video is just a list in one form or another whether it's a list of tips or steps myths or reasons to do something thinking about your videos like that gives them a natural structure that just makes them a lot easier to plan and write step three build a video road map over time so when you're just getting started keep things simple and focus on answering fa cues for the first 3 months at least these videos are going to be your foundation and they'll provide a ton of value to potential clients then after 3 to 6 months you can start expanding into how or what type videos that walk your audience through how to do specific tasks or tell them what they should be doing or avoiding for example how to create a menu in WordPress or 22 ways to use chat GPT those listicle videos fit really well in into this category then after about 6 months you can start experimenting with why and should videos you know this is deeper content that answers decision-making questions like why email marketing crushes social media or should you Outsource social media management these types of videos really help position you as the thought leader and true expert that your viewers need then by the time you hit 9 months or more you can start adding in more discoverable videos you know videos that are meant to be shown to people that YouTube knows or interested in your topics right on their homepage or in their suggested videos on the sidebar these usually have those catchier titles that are more designed to Peak curiosity and expand your reach like I paid $24,000 for Alex Heros system steal it creating videos is great but to turn viewers into clients you need to make it as easy as possible for them to take that next step this is where optimiz in your YouTube to clients Bridge comes in making sure that your viewers know exactly what to do once they're ready to actually connect with your business now the simplest way of doing that is just by adding a link in your video description so every video should have a really clear call to action whether it's directing people to your services page or offering a free guide download of some kind or inviting them to book a consultation now it's really important to put this link at the top of your video description where it's easy to see and a lot of popular YouTubers do it that way Alex hosi puts links to his offers right at the top of his description along with the strong call to action Dan Martell does something similar by linking his newsletter at the very top which helps him build his email list so even though these links are front and center it really doesn't affect their views negatively it just makes it easier for people to take action I used to make the mistake of putting my Links at the bottom of the description you know thinking that putting it at the top would be a little too aggressive and make people less likely to want to watch my videos but it turns out that when I switched them to the top I didn't see any drop in views at all instead I'm just getting more signups for my master classes which directly fuels my sales now these links can either be direct sales called to action something like book a consultation or sign up for my service or they can go to your lead magnets that are designed to build your email list and you know lead magnets are anything just like free ebooks checklists guides that they can download in exchange for giving you their email address and ideally you're going to have both of these things in your business right direct calls to action and Lead magnet so then you can Alternate which link you use depending on the relevance to the video topic itself just as an example if you're a business coach and you're making a video on productivity tips you might incl in a lead magnet link Like You Know download my free productivity checklist or if the video is more directly tied to the services you offer your call to action might be click the link below to schedule a free consultation the goal is just to make sure that the call to action matches the content of the video so that clicking on it feels like the natural next step for them and don't overload your description with tons of different links stick to two Macs whether that's a lead magnet and a service link or just one key link that drives action so if you're linking out right now to your Instagram and your Facebook page and your LinkedIn take all those out and just concentrate on the ones that actually build your business the fewer distractions there are the more likely that your viewers are to click 7 years ago I made the decision to start a YouTube channel to help more clients find me and it more than tripled my business's Revenue in less than 2 years and since then it's more than tripled again so if you want the shortcut my exact funnel for how I did it so you can 10ex your own leads clients and yes profit I'm revealing it all so let's start off by talking about what I'm just calling the average sales funnel now this may look really familiar this may be what you're using right now you know some version of getting people through paid advertising or you know you're on Instagram or Facebook social post posts or even SEO that one's really common and your goal is to get all of these people to your website right and then of the people who come to your website a certain number of them are going to book a consultation or appointment or a sales call and from there it's a really iffy equation of how many people are actually going to be enticed to go for the sale at that point and here's why that that gets really average results it's because they are not warmed up enough remember they were coming from social media or even SEO where they probably just heard about you for the first time and then if you get them to your website first of all not a lot of them are going to be willing to talk on the phone at all at that point and of the ones who are they may schedule a consult or a sales call but they're really just fishing for information at this point they're not super ready and Prime to go with you as a business and then of the ones who do get on the phone with you you're probably not a salesperson right you know your business really well but unless you're great on the phone at like closing people kind of shmoozing with them and talking them into your rates if they're not the lowest out there that can be a really big uphill battle it was with me um when I first started my web design business I would get people through SEO you know I would rank high for terms like web design Los Angeles people woulded a call with me and I'd be on the phone with them just like trying to explain to them why I was worth the prices I was charging and they weren't even really that high so it definitely got average results for me that is until I switched to the YouTube sales funnel which has worked out exponentially better for me so here's how that goes um it's a little bit different so it's going to start off with people going to YouTube searching for how to do something that you can help them with so what happens is they do a search your video will pop up for them right they'll watch that video and a percentage of those people are going to then be moved to another one of your videos now that can happen naturally or even smarter if you actually at the end of the video kind of direct them to the next video they need to watch the point is you want to get them to watch more than one here's why because once people have watched a couple of your videos this is what happens YouTube is going to recommend more of your videos to them in other words they're going to do some of your marketing for you actually a lot of your marketing for you so this happens on the homepage so you know how you go to YouTube and your homepage is kind of all lined up with videos that YouTube thinks you're going to like the reason they think that is because you've either watched videos on that topic or more likely you've watch watched other videos by that Creator so they've done the math of okay they've watched three videos of this person already they probably want more so they'll be shown on your homepage and that kicks off a binge session which is exactly what you want once people are caught in that binge session and they're watching a lot of videos from you doesn't have to be all at once it can be over the course of weeks or even months but it generally happens pretty quickly um a certain number of them will think to themselves you know what this person has great advice for me I actually just want to hire them to do this for me so they're going to be curious enough to either on their own just Googling it or following a link from your Channel or from your videos to your website and once they're on your website here's what happens a number of those people are going to want to go for your consultation call but it's not like in the old case where they were cold traffic and they just came and they weren't super motivated these people are much more pre-qualified because they've been watching your videos they're warmed up to you now they know like and trust you already and suddenly you've got a brand new client so why does this funnel work so much better than the average funnel well repeated exposure is the secret again they've been watching your videos two three four at a time they're binging your videos they see you over and over again remember how in marketing they used to say um someone needs about 7 touch points with your business before they'll actually want to reach out to you these days it's even higher than that but when it's video that shortcuts the process and it accelerates that process because when they watch three or more videos no love and trust is built they used to say no like and Trust I like to say no love and Trust because it really does kick things up a notch and people really start to feel a bond with you once they've been watching watching a lot of your videos so I don't think it's a stretch to to say no love and Trust there then once they've been watching enough of your videos they get really curious about working with you they start to think well what if I could actually hire this person to do this for me how much better would my results be if they just did it for me so then they watch more of your videos and you're now their very first choice when it comes to finding someone they want to work with so essentially what happens is every single video you end up making is its own pathway into your business they watch your videos and that drives them over to your website where they can actually become a client okay so now let's get into the seven simple steps to succeed on YouTube so step one is going to be to find your focus in other words who are you making videos for and what are you making them about so you really need to understand who your perfect client is to make this happen for you so the first thing you need to nail down are the demographics of your perfect client so these are the easy things age gender location their occupation stuff like that that's the easy stuff to nail down where it gets a little harder and a little more involved is in the psychographics it's harder but this is where the real gold gets discovered so here's where you're going to want to really get a handle on what keeps them up at night and what do they struggle with the most most this is going to inform the types of videos that you're going to make because remember people search for them right so they they're having a problem they search for the answer to it and then hopefully there you are giving the answer so once you know the demographics and the psycho Graphics you need to develop a detailed audience Avatar so this is just basically where you write it all down including you know the demographics and the psychographics so you can really understand the pain points of your specific audience and then from there you want to research your Niche right and I'm just seeing we've got kind of a duplicate here so I'm just going to get rid of that when you research your Niche what you want to do is see what successful channels are already doing in your industry you know what kind of content are they making and how are they connecting with their audience so check out the types of videos they're doing and pay special attention to which video types they're making that are actually connecting the most you can see how popular each of their videos are so if you see that they've done one that's really kind of catching on you might want to do something similar to that okay then once you know the overall direction of your channel you want to lay out your first 52 topics so why 52 well because there are 52 weeks in a year and I highly recommend creating weekly content one video a week that's what's going to keep you top of mind so how are you going to find these 52 topics to cover your first year here you want to start by just listing out all the common questions that your clients ask you all the time what's on their mind the most so just write those down and then use these questions as your very first video ideas it's a great Light Lift way just to get going really fast you just make FAQ videos one video per each question but once you're out of ideas there like maybe you only can think of 10 to 20 FAQs where do you go from there well you got to do some keyword research you got to figure out what people are actually searching for on the platform so YouTube's actually made this really easy with their inspiration tab so once you're in It's called The Creator Studio there's different tabs one of them is called inspiration and it will show you exactly what Search terms are the most popular and you want to focus on what your ideal clients are actually searching for that's so important because if you ignore that and you just make the videos that you want to make but there's no search volume for it like no one's looking for it no one's going to find your videos that's the secret sauce here then beyond that again you want to check out your competitors right you want to see what the most successful channels in your Niche are making videos about that's going to give you all kinds of ideas and you really want to try to find topics that they haven't covered or where you can offer something different and here's the thing you don't have to think of all this on your own we're living in the age of AI so I want you to definitely use AI for your ideas so use things like chat GPT to help your brainstorm more topics you just got to use the right prompts to generate a whole list of potential video ideas so all you got to do is really just chat with it as if you're talking to a really smart intern who can handle this for you so there's no real secret to it just go to Chad gbt tell it what your niches and what you think you'd like to make videos about then just ask it for a list of anything that maybe you've overlooked then you want to plan your content so you want to create a Content calendar to schedule your videos out this is going to be really helpful so basically you're just going to take all the different topics you've come up with and you want to just put them in an order that makes the most sense what I would recommend doing is just starting with the ones that are easiest for you to make because getting started is the hardest part for sure so start there but beyond that what you want to do is mix different types of videos to keep your content interesting so let's say you're an accountant right and you're going to be making videos about things like tax prep or bookkeeping or you know just general Business Financial advice what you probably want to stay away from is clustering too many like videos together in you know subsequent weeks so you'd want to do a bookkeeping one then a a tax prep one you know for me I do a lot of marketing videos I talk about websites I talk about YouTube now um I talk talk about just different digital marketing techniques so but what I wouldn't do is talk about you know Facebook ads for four weeks in a row people might get bored of that so you want to split it up now in step three we're going to be thinking about are you going to be focusing on short content or you know Longs I guess they're called shorts so I call the the full length ones Longs here just for for a shorthand but let's just talk about the differences and compare the two of these real quick so shorts they're definitely quicker to produce they're less intimidating and they can attract viewers faster Longs on the other hand are a lot more in-depth they're better for building a loyal audience but they do require more time and effort no question about it so my verdict here long form videos are going to be way better for you for generating clients so I would really focus mostly on long form content but I will say when you're first starting out it's actually a really good idea to start building confidence and gaining traction with shorts so I actually do recommend creating short videos at first just to get more comfortable with filming and editing they're a lot quicker to do you can just kind of whip out your phone it just helps you start really easily because there's no expectation of high production value either with shorts actually the ones that are way more off the cuff do even better than the more polished ones so it's great just to take your phone out you can do these in your car it's pretty good sound in your car you can do them just anywhere you can think of so start there I would say maybe do like 10 to 20 of them and just schedule them out just to start building the confidence building the Reps to get comfortable on camera because I'm not going to sugar coat it it's a skill that takes a little bit of getting used to but then from there I want you to start thinking about transitioning over to the long form videos because they're going to do you the most good and you're just going to use the experience that you gain doing shorts to help you make your long form videos even better and another cool thing about doing Longs is you can actually repurpose it really well so what I mean by that is you can turn your long videos into multiple shorts just to be able to maximize your content and the the work that you've already done and then you can share those shorts not just in YouTube but on other platforms like Instagram Tik Tok uh even LinkedIn and Pinterest allow you to share these short videos so you've already done the work creating the long form video now you can push it out even further to more people which is pretty cool and there's AI software that'll let you do this there's actually one called Opus clip that people kind of swear by so that's going to take your long firm videos and it's just using AI they're going to extract the most viral ready bits that it thinks will do well on their own they'll clip it they'll add captions all that good stuff so you don't really have to do a lot of extra work work for repurposing but here's the thing I really want to impress on you if you take nothing else away from today you got to just start you know don't wait for everything to be perfect it never will be it's kind of like I don't have any kids yet but they keep telling me like there's no perfect time to have kids I think it's the same with YouTube there's no perfect time to start just use what you have you know cuz here's the thing look at these videos right here look at these setups is there anything super duper special about anything in these shots I would say there's not I mean they've just gotten started with what they have and here's the thing no one really cares what your background looks like or the fancy equipment you have so don't let those be excuses that stop you from starting and if you're worried about your on camera presence I know a lot of people are super scared of that I know I was at first the thing is the more you practice the better you're going to get over time there's no way around there's no way you won't improve the more you do it and the cool thing that I always like to say is at first when you're at your most scared the good news is no one's really watching yet you haven't built up much of an audience the more your confidence grows as you move along in the process your audience will grow along with it so it's kind of like a a self-fulfilling thing there okay so step four you've already got your topics your ideas now you need to think about how how to package those ideas and the way to think about packaging comes in two different elements it's your titles and it's your thumbnails so let's talk about titles first so when you're coming up with your titles you need to use the keywords that your audience is actually searching for and you also want those titles to be clear and concise so we talked about doing keyword research earlier back a few steps so you're going to want to take those actual Search terms that people are searching for and that's going to be your best bet at least when you're first getting started for what to title your videos at least half of it let me explain here so what you also want to add is some kind of a dramatic element words like best fastest easiest so we would start with kind of that more utilitarian search-based title but then you want to add something to it so if people are searching for I don't know how to M Stripes into your lawn right that could be a good title right it's it it does what it says on the box but you can also make it a little bit better by adding one of those dramatic elements like the best way to M Stripes into your lawn the fastest way the easiest way that just gives your title a little bit more oomph a little bit more punch to stand out against someone else who made a similar video but it gets challenging because you also want to try to keep your title under 50 characters just to make sure that it's not going to be cut off on devices so especially on phones um it will get cut off if it's too long so trying to keep it under 50 characters it's a good idea if you can't do all of these things in your title while keeping it short I would recommend just keeping it simple and using the keyword in your title first and foremost and then use your thumbnail to add the drama because again packaging is your title and your thumbnail you can add those those modifiers and kind of making it feel like a bigger idea in your title or in your thumbnail or both so real estate's tight in your title just put the extra oomph into your thumbnail so let's talk more about that so obviously your thumbnail is going to be your first impression people are going to see that even more um than they're going to look at your title and it should visually represent the key point of your video and be enticing enough to make people you know want to click it and here's the thing faces have been shown especially ones you know showing happy faces or excited emotions these are going to be really engaging and make people want to click even more so you don't always have to use your face in a thumbnail but it's generally a good idea to do it but you also want to keep it really simple so if you're going to have words in it I would say no more than two to three words and you want to limit the number of objects to 3 to five five so that there's no clutter so for instance here in this thumbnail we have three different elements we have a hand we have a looks like a calculator and we have the text and again see notice it's three words of text and here we've got his face we have these YouTube buttons and we have the text it's four words but I'm not going to worry about that and here we've got the person's face the text and an arrow right here as well so keeping it to three elements is just going to keep it nice and simple think of it like a billboard right if you're zooming on the freeway past a billboard and it's got 10 different things on it you're not going to pay attention to any of them but if it just has you know picture of like a burger the McDonald's logo and a a short catchy little phrase that's memorable and the other thing you want to keep in mind with your thumbnail is you want to keep it consistent with your branding so what I don't mean by that is you know using your business logo we don't want to do that that's not what I mean by branding instead you just want to focus on a really cohesive look that your viewers can come to identify you with your videos so just consistent Style with using the same colors fonts and layouts for that brand recognition take a look at these thumbnails from the same Creator right they all have the same you know kind of blue text block and the image over here over and over again and even the ones that don't really go with the others they're still using blue and a face and for this one you know there's still the same kind of bookshelf behind him that we have in all the others so there's definitely some branding elements going on and even this one has uh the blue text block so they don't all have to match exactly but they should kind of feel like they're part of the same family if that makes sense okay moving on to step five we're going to talk about scripting your videos now because once you've got someone we've pulled them in with your packaging and your great topic now we have to wow them with the actual content and there's a established way of doing that that works best especially for Education channels like yours would be so the first thing our script needs to do is reel them in with an engaging hook that needs to grab their attention immediately so some things I like to do are start with a strong attention grabbing statement or even better yet a question that they would identify with this could be something like what if I were to tell you there is a specific blueprint for fill in the blank or is your dog peeing in the house even though you thought he was house broken nothing Earth shattering but if someone identifies that question and they think yeah that's happening to me they're very interested because they'll assume you have the answer next you want to assure them that you do have the right answer by clearly stating what the viewer will gain from watching the video in other words what are they going to learn if they stick around and watch the whole thing and you want to do this in the first seven to 10 seconds um you would definitely want to hook them in at least this part can take a little longer than that but you want to grab that attention in the first 7 to 10 seconds so now let's talk about delivering on the meat so what do I mean by the meat that's the the main part of your video where you're actually teaching your thing that the video is about so this can be very simple right just teach it I learned from there's a Creator named Ali abdal maybe you've heard of him where he famously said every video is just a list right either it's five mistakes or 10 tips or you know three steps that kind of thing so if you think of it that way you can be very straightforward in your delivery however it helps if you kick it up a notch it'll make you more relatable and it'll increase that no love and Trust Factor if you can use storytelling to your advantage throughout the video not all the time sprinkle it in here and there so what I mean by storytelling is you're going to use either personal or client stories to make your points more memorable so rather than just teaching on a point you would do that but then you would say and I remember the time when I was struggling with this here's what I did here's what I figured out and then here's what happened as a result so your personalized in it a little bit and I really like using client stories too because when you talk about your clients in your videos that solidifies the idea that hey this person actually works with clients maybe I can be one of those clients right so sprinkle in mentions of clients client stories how you help them whenever they make sense so you've hooked them in you've taught them something in the Meat part now you need to create that binge session so they watch the next video so so what you want to do is end with a really strong call to action okay don't do what almost everybody else does in their YouTube videos which is using wrapup language things like okay guys hope that was helpful because that Clues people in that the video is wrapping up or you know to summarize don't do any kind of a summary of what they've already learned I know it goes against what you learned in school you teach it then you do the conclusion you kind of recap you don't want any of that in your YouTube videos what you want to do instead is get them to watch the next video and the best way to do that is to offer no kind of indication that this content is done you instead just segue to the next video so you'd be focusing on how to create train your puppy and then at the end of it you'll just say but of course none of this is going to make any difference if you don't have the right kind of crate watch this video next where I show you my top three picks for dog crates something like that so there's no Lull in the conversation it's just teaching teaching teaching and I'm going to teach you some more over here but of course you're in this to make money and to get clients right so that's where the 1/4th rule comes into play so one out of every four of your videos roughly that can be a more direct go to my website to learn more type of called action so 34s of your videos are now watching this video then the fourth one is and if you want to learn even more if I can help you even more click here go to my website schedule a consultation and now we've already talked about using AI to help you find video topics it can also help you with scripting too I use it all the time to help me out with my own scripts so what you want to do is use tools like chat GPT to help you brainstorm and create the basic outline for your script that's where you start you can even use it to help you refine your hook right the 7 to 10 second opening of your videos so you can get suggestions for really strong opening lines to help you capture attention if you can't think of anything yourself but there's a danger to using chat gbt or AI to help you with your entire script you want to use it in the right way which is generally to script with AI then you want to refine it yourself you want to add those personal touches to make it sound much more natural for you right so what I do is I I have it give me basically my first draft of a script then I go through and I pick out little bits of okay I can add a personal story here this reminds me of an old client of mine I can kind of talk about that there that's where you're going to get the most bang for your buck with AI you use it to help you 80% then you add the next 20% okay moving along to step six this is where you've been you've been going for a little bit you're getting your feet wet you're more comfortable now it's time to buy back some of your time because the thing is for YouTube to work for you you got to be consistent with it it's definitely the key to all this working but you don't want your videos to take over your entire life right you're running a business you don't have time to devote to YouTube full-time good news is you don't have to so there's a few ways that I personally save a lot of time in creating my videos the first one is in batching my content so batching just means doing a batch your videos together um rather than doing one-offs I started doing one-offs like when I first started my channel I had a video this week that was going to come out next week so this week I worked on this video next week I worked on the next video well I'm recommending you plan A month's worth of videos at a time when you start I actually plan two months at a time so you want to set aside time to brainstorm and outline an entire month's worth of videos that's going to be step one then you're going to script all those videos at the same time that'll keep you consistent too because once you're on a task it's so much easier to stay in that task from start to finish otherwise what happens is you know we go into task switching mode so let's say you were going to be scripting your video then you're were going to be shooting it later that day and then editing it your brain has to do these minor shits and you never quite latch on to the new task so doing all your brainstorming all your scripting all your shooting and all your editing in silos saves a lot of mental bandwidth and it helps you do a lot more too so then just record all your videos in one session and then edit in batches too so you're going to want to edit multiple videos during one session so again they can stay consistent that'll help your videos kind of look the same too so if you're doing a certain title treatment when you're doing them all together you're going to remember what all those little things were but all that to say as soon as you possibly can I want you to start Outsourcing tasks like editing hiring a video editor is not that expensive and let's face it they'll probably do a better job than you will especially if you're just starting out and it's one of those tasks that doesn't need you to do it right you should be concentrating your efforts on the tasks only you can do and let other people handle the rest okay and to do that you're just going to try to find some Freelancers on platforms like upwork or Fiverr they can help you with editing they can also help you with thumbnail design that's another task that I don't necessarily recommend you do yourself because again the stuff that only you can do is bringing your expertise to the scripts and bringing yourself and your personality to your videos okay now we're on to step seven optimizing your YouTube to client Bridge what is the YouTube decline Bridge well let's say you so you've got your videos over here and you've got clients over here what's the bridge that takes them from here to here that's what I'm talking about when I say that bridge so there's a few different ways that you can really make this work even better for you um we've already touched on this one which is building trust through those client stories so again incorporate those brief mentions of your clients in their successes in your videos that makes your advice more tangible and relatable but again it also plants that seed that okay they work with clients I want to be one of those clients so that's going to help ease people across that bridge itself you also want to showcase results right when you're discussing a topic in a video reference specific results that your clients have gotten by following your advice not only is that good social proof but it shows what you can do for your viewers if they pay you and of course you want to include links in all the descriptions of all your videos that go back to your website and on your channel page so when you create your channel for the first time there's an about section where you can add a link to your website and make sure you do that and then in every video description just make sure that at the end of it or somewhere in there there's a little heading that says want to work with us want to work with me and then you drop a link to your website so that people can e easily again cross the bridge and when you do that you definitely want to use strong clear calls to action in your descriptions don't just drop a link in other words don't just put the the link to your website with no context you want to say something like book your free consultation or learn more about our services and that's going to help guide people directly to your site and again for this to work really well you need to create those binge sessions that's what's going to get people from YouTube over to your website so what you want to think about once you've been going for a little bit don't worry about this right away but you want to focus on having a playlist strategy so you want to organize your videos into playlists that can guide viewers through related topics so again this is going to encourage those binges and they just keep people watching your content longer that's what it takes and then you want to use end screens and cards to your advantage so the end screen is what pops up at the end of a video remember we talked about what what to say now now you're going to want to watch this video next like a little thumbnail will pop up then so that people can go there so that's all part of it you don't just want to say verbally go watch this video next and make them find it of course you point and then the thumbnails up there that they can click on that's going to help keep viewers on your channel just where you want them increasing that no love and Trust Factor we talked about but then once you've gotten people to your website it's not done yet there's more to the story so you need to optimize your call to action button on your website so that should be waiting for them as soon as they get there they shouldn't have to look for it they shouldn't have to hunt around it should say something like get your free consultation or schedule a call and it should be bright it should be bold it should be an action term it should not just be something like learn more that's passive that's soft you want it to be really clear of exactly what they're going to be doing then once they've clicked that button and it's time for to schedule something you want to streamline that booking process so what most people do is they just have a form that people fill out the problem with the form is people don't really understand what's coming next so I like to use a tool like cly that lets people just book appointments directly through your website it's just a much more seamless process now I know how important it is to see examples of all the stuff in action to really be able to wrap your head around it and I've got plenty to show along with Real Results you can expect when you do this the right way so to get that road map with all the examples and results you need to sign up for my brand new free Master Class where I'm going to just give you everything you need to make this work for you in
