Do Keywords Still Matter for SEO?

Summary

  • Keywords still matter for SEO, even with the rise of large language models like Chat GPT.
  • Search behaviors are changing, with queries becoming longer, sometimes even a paragraph.
  • Despite these changes, you still need to identify keywords and topics to create relevant content and pages.
  • As long as there's demand, shown by search volume or user signals, you should build content to meet that demand.
  • Identify the keywords your clients are searching for, then create pages to meet their needs.
  • The length of queries doesn't affect the need for dedicated pages, such as those for specific keywords like "blue shoes."
  • Once a page ranks, it can also rank for various long-tail variations of that keyword.
  • Keywords are crucial for creating well-optimized pages, and this need won't change soon.

How To Take Action

I would suggest focusing on identifying the keywords your clients are searching for. Even as search queries get longer, having good keywords helps create content that matches what people want.

A good way to start is by making a list of topics your customers are interested in. Use tools that show search volumes to see what words and phrases are popular. This will help you know what kind of pages to build.

Next, create specific pages dedicated to each main keyword. For example, if your keyword is “blue shoes,” make a page just for blue shoes. This will help you rank better not only for that keyword but for other similar queries, too.

Think like your customers. Ask yourself, "What questions could they have?" This will guide you in creating helpful and relevant content.

Consider using feedback or user signals on what your audience is saying. This shows what they care about and need more information on. Use these insights to build detailed content.

Remember, keywords are key to making your website more noticeable, so don’t skip this part. It’s crucial for search engines and can even help with newer tools like Chat GPT.

Starting small but thinking smart can make a big difference without huge costs. Prioritize what brings the most value and adjust as you learn more about your audience's needs.

so do keywords still matter for SEO well one thing's for sure is chat GPT and perplexity and all these large language models have changed the game when it comes to keywords because the length of a query has gotten much longer and I've I've experienced this myself when I'm trying to discover something inside of chat gbt sometimes my query could be a whole paragraph long but with that said when it comes to actually the practicality of executing SEO you still need to have a topic or a keyword to actually build a page around so in that regard although search behavior is changing we still need to identify these keywords and these topics to actually create content and pages around so this is never going to change as long as we have quantifiable demand which is search volume or even user signals around a particular idea we know that we need to build out an asset to support that idea to satisfy the intent of whatever that problem is so what you do is you identify keywords that your ideal clients are searching for and then you build out pages to ultimately fulfill the intent of those keywords that is not going to change the length of the query does not matter because even if I Target a keyword like blue shoes I'm still going to build a dedicated page specifically for blue shoes and what will happen is once that ranks it's going to end up ranking for all the longtail variations of that keyword as well and that includes in Google and other traditional search search engines but also in the large language models as well so you still need keywords to be able to build out proper optimiz pages and I don't see that changing in the near future
